2017 Nominations are Open!

Thank you for your interest in the 2017 Best Ottawa Business Awards (BOBs). Please see all award categories below and follow the two-step nomination process. Once the initial questionnaire is complete, you will be able to submit your nominations for a specific award category. The nomination deadline is September 29, 2017.

Award Categories:

Best Business: Nominations to cover growth initiatives, financial strength, market position and community involvement.

  • Growth: Using specific figures where possible, tell us how the company is expanding, including revenues and profitability, head count, new products and services, new customers or markets. What is driving this growth? 
  • Financial strength: Tell us why the company will be an anchor in Ottawa's business community for years to come, including strength of leadership team and employee base, diversity of revenue, longevity of customers and plans for the future.
  • Market position: Tell us how the company is beating the competition, including size/share of market, competitive advantages, innovation strategy and plans for new markets.
  • Community involvement: Tell us how the company is giving back, including charitable efforts, corporate social responsibility and community/industry leadership.

Best New Business: Nominations to cover a brief company overview, details on leadership, growth initiatives and financial footing.

All companies nominated in this category must have commenced operations after January 1, 2013. They must not be an expansion of an existing company, a company that has simply changed names or an existing firm that has added a new location.

  • Company overview: Tell us how and why the company was established. What problem the company is trying to solve or niche it’s trying to fill? How it the company’s approach unique and innovative?
  • Leadership: Tell us about the people behind the company by highlighting its leadership team, their entrepreneurial track record, advisory board and talent of employee base.
  • Growth: Using specific figures where possible, tell us how the company is expanding, including revenues and profitability, head count, new products and services, new customers or markets. What is driving this growth? 
  • Financial footing: Demonstrate how the company will sustain itself. How is it financed? What is its early financial track record? What sources of funding are available? What assets does it own?

PERFORMANCE CATEGORIES:

Best Performance in Export: Outline the company’s export initiatives this past year.

  • Total export sales in the company's most recent fiscal year and exports as a percentage of total sales
  • Export sales growth (percentage increase)
  • Factors behind growth
  • Countries where the company is exporting
  • Exporting challenges the company has overcome

Best Performance in HR: Detail a noteworthy human resource initiative undertaken by the company this past year.

  • What was the strategy and goals/objectives of this initiative? Were they achieved?
  • How did it improve employee engagement?
  • How will it impact recruitment and retention?

Best Performance in Marketing: Detail a noteworthy marketing initiative undertaken by the company this past year.

  • What was the strategy and goals/objectives of this initiative? Were they achieved?
  • How was it executed and what made it unique/innovative?
  • What was the return on investment?
  • How did it improve market share, enhance customer loyalty, build the company’s brand and/or enable entry into new markets?

Best Performance in Sales: Detail a noteworthy sales initiative undertaken by the company this past year.

  • What was the strategy and goals/objectives of this initiative? Were they achieved?
  • How did it impact overall revenues?
  • How many new clients were secured?
  • What new markets were penetrated?

Best Performance in Customer Experience: Detail a noteworthy Customer Experience initiative undertaken by the company this past year.

  • STRATEGY: What was the customer experience strategy and the goals/objectives to be achieved? Were they achieved?
  • VOICE OF CUSTOMER: How did you monitor customer insights to collect, analyze and track measurable improvements in the customer experience? What improvements were realized?
  • BRANDED CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE®: How does your customer experience strategy reinforce your brand promise to employees and customers?
  • EMPLOYEES: How do you measure employees for customer experience improvements?

Best Performance in Social Entrepreneurship: Detail a noteworthy social entrepreneurship initiative undertaken by the company this past year.

  • Why is it important for your business to have a social conscience?
  • How is social responsibility a part of your business model?
  • Please describe your company’s actions that have an impact on  the society/the environment. Provide 2-3 concrete examples.
  • Which group are you targeting with social responsibility? What’s the rationale?
  • How do you benefit from social responsibility?

Best Performance in Sustainability: How did the company distinguish itself as a sustainability leader this past year?

  • How has the firm integrated sustainability into its business strategy, decision-making, operations, culture and value chain?
  • How has it improved the company’s triple-bottom line metrics (economic, social and environmental)?
  • What were the goals and targets? Were they achieved?

Company of the Year

This award celebrates a company that has demonstrated outstanding business leadership, excellence in innovation and a commitment to their community and employees. This means increasing profitability, community involvement and thought leadership, and demonstration of sound business fundamentals. Happy employees help too.

Team of the Year

Does your company have outstanding employees making the impossible possible?  Is your Engineering team unmatched? What about the business development team?  This award will be judged based the team's impact on 5 criteria; benefits to the company, advantage gained, processes improved, productivity, and fun to be around.

  • What benefits were realized by the company? Ie. Could be revenue generation, cost savings, team building, get creative!
  • Was a strategic advantage gained?  Please describe
  • Were business processes improved?
  • Was productivity improved?
  •  Are they fun to be around?  Tell us about them!
